BLACK CAPS CHIEF DEFENDS DISMISSAL

@ 11:35 PM (18 months, 28 days ago)
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden has defended his team's conduct during their first Test victory over Sri Lanka. The Black Caps completed a five-wicket win on Saturday after wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum ran out Muttiah Muralitharan when he strayed from his crease to congratulate team-mate Kumar Sangakkara on completing his hundred. "There is no issue at all about the spirit of cricket as the ball was still alive," Snedden told The Christchurch Press. "The ball was being thrown in to the wicketkeeper and was still very much alive. In this situation the batsman must not leave his crease until the ball is dead. "Once the ball has reached the wicketkeeper's gloves and play has stopped then the ball becomes dead. That was the time he could have gone down the wicket, not beforehand. It is not dead while it is still in the air." Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene is confident his side can regroup and square the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The Sri Lankans were beaten by five wickets inside three days against the Kiwis in the opening Test in Christchurch, but Jayawardene is eager to take the positives out of the defeat. Sangakkara's unbeaten century in the second innings and the 12 wickets collected by strike bowler Chaminda Vaas and Muralitharan have given heart to the tourists, who will look to bounce back in the second and final Test which commences in Wellington on Friday. "Looking at the performances, Sangakkara's century was brilliant and so were Chaminda Vaas and Muralitharan with the ball," said an upbeat Jayawardene. "I must tell you that none of the Kiwi batsmen played the two of them with any confidence. "I assure you that we will rectify all the mistakes and get our act together for the next game and when that happens I am sure the Kiwis will be beaten." Jayawardene was also quick to defend his decision to bat first at Jade Stadium, despite the fact that his side were skittled out for just 154 in their first innings. "I took a look at the wicket on the first morning and it appeared to be good for batting," he said. "Like on any other wicket, the first session was going to be the key as the pitch was going to have some life. "However, generally all pitches ease out and then batting becomes so easy. "But everything went against us with the loss three quick wickets of [Sanath] Jayasuriya, Sangakkara and myself. And the 154 we made wasn't enough to put the Kiwis under pressure."
